The American Dental Association recommends having a dental cleaning and exam performed every six months. This will help clean your teeth from harmful plaque and tartar while also detecting any oral health issues such as gum disease, tooth decay, or oral cancer.

Each dental exam at Oshins Of Smiles’s Schenectady, New York practice starts with one of our dental hygienist’s cleaning and polishing your teeth. Throughout the cleaning, we will keep an eye out for any overt problems. Should we notice an area of concern, we will pass that information on to the dentist.

Our dentist will then conduct a thorough examination of your mouth.  If there are areas of weakened tooth enamel without salient tooth decay, the dentist might recommend a fluoride treatment.

This treatment involves pouring a dental-grade fluoride gel into special trays that are inserted into your mouth with a gentle suction wand. They will need to be held there for a few minutes to allow the fluoride to permeate the microscopic pores in your tooth enamel.

You will need to avoid eating and drinking for up to an hour afterward to maximize the fluoride saturation in your tooth enamel. Going forward, it is beneficial to brush your teeth twice a day with a toothpaste with added fluoride. Limiting your consumption of acidic drinks can also help maintain strong tooth enamel.
