4 Important Questions It’s Okay to Ask Your Dentist

A man asking a dentist an oral health question

Are you getting the most out of your dental check-up and cleaning appointments? Did you know that your dentist welcomes your questions while you’re there? Whether you already have a list ready to go, or you need some inspiration, here are a few important queries your dentist will be happy to answer the next time you’re in the chair!

What type of toothbrush and toothpaste should I use?

A trip to the oral hygiene aisle at your local discount store can be very overwhelming. With so many choices, how can you tell which products are best for you and your family? Do you need a sensitive toothpaste? Is there any benefit to baking soda? Do whitening gels really work? What about toothbrushes? Is manual okay? How hard should the bristles be?

The good news is that your dentist can answer all these questions and more, so if you’re lost in a sea of oral hygiene products, don’t be afraid to ask for help!

Do I need to use mouthwash?

Mouthwash is one of those products that many patients either love or hate. But are they necessary for daily use, and which type is best? Your dentist can let you know if you should add mouthwash to your oral hygiene routine, and which ingredients you should choose (or avoid) for best results.

Do I have bad breath?

Asking a friend or family member to check your breath can be kind of awkward, but not your dentist! If you’re concerned that you’ve got an unpleasant aroma emanating from your mouth, he’ll be happy to help. Not only will he not sugarcoat the answer, if there is a problem he’s the perfect person to recommend a solution!

Are there any questions I should ask my doctor?

In recent years, research has shown that many oral health conditions can become overall health problems if not addressed quickly.  For example, gum disease can lead to inflammation that can cause a variety of problems throughout the body.  Furthermore, patients who have illnesses like diabetes often have a higher risk of oral health problems like tooth loss and periodontitis. Thus, whether you already have a preexisting condition or you are concerned about developing a new one, check with your dentist to see if there’s anything you should mention to your doctor that could help protect your oral and your overall health.

Remember, your biannual exam and cleaning is your opportunity to speak to your dentist about anything oral health related, so don’t be embarrassed or afraid to ask. You and your smile will be better for it!
