Are DIY Tooth Replacement Options Safe?

Man with missing tooth, needs tooth replacement

Missing teeth can cause all sorts of problems, such as reduced confidence, dental drift, difficulty chewing, and more. If you have one or more gap in your smile, you are probably in the process of considering your tooth replacement options. You could visit your dentist, which may cost several hundred dollars or more. Or, you could take a risk and try a DIY solution. But are DIY tooth replacement options safe? This blog post talks about why you are much better off seeking professional care.

What Are DIY Tooth Replacement Options?

Some private companies sell products that they claim can be used for tooth replacement, and a handful of social media influencers are also advocating DIY prosthetic teeth. Some use polymer beads that can be melted and morphed into the shape of a tooth. Certain kits even come with coloration tools so users can match the color of their natural teeth.

Other DIY hacks might involve the use of different types of pastes or waxes. Some people even try to make replacement teeth out of orthodontic wax, which is normally used to help people with braces enjoy a more comfortable treatment experience.

On the surface, DIY tooth replacement might seem like it is harmless, inexpensive, and even fun. However, it comes with some very serious risks.

The Problems with DIY Tooth Replacement

There are a number of problems that might arise as a result of DIY tooth replacement attempts:

  • DIY tooth replacement materials are seldom hygienic. Food and bacteria could easily collect around them, leading to gum inflammation, infections, and other issues. A severe infection can even attack the jaw and lead to bone loss.
  • You may not be able to eat with DIY prosthetic teeth. Often, DIY teeth are only useful for aesthetics and little else.
  • DIY teeth usually do not look good. At a glance, DIY teeth might seem to look good. However, if anyone looks at your smile for more than a second or two, they are likely to notice that something is off. Unless you are a trained artist, any teeth that you make yourself are probably going to look strange.
  • DIY teeth may be uncomfortable. If a DIY tooth is a little too wide or tall, it might interfere with your bite and cause discomfort.

See a Dentist for High-Quality Tooth Replacement

DIY tooth replacement can be tempting, but it is not worth the problems it can cause! Conversely, a dentist can provide sturdy, functional, beautiful, and safe prosthetics that last for years.
